Drudge Report is a huge exception once you get to the source of the website. It is almost run entirely by a single person, Matt Drudge. It all began in 1995 and although it wasn’t the way it was back then, the website was started as a gossip column focusing only on Hollywood and Washington D.C. Drudge Report started off later on when he started e-mail based newsletters from his apartment, using his connections with the media insiders to break stories, at most times, even before they hit the mainstream media.
Over the years, which we’re talking about more than 20 years now, Matt Drudge had multiple assistants to maintain the website and help in the writing of headlines for the website. Matt Drudge received national attention in 1996 after breaking the news that Jack Kemp would be the Rob Dole’s running mate in the 1996 presidential election. And just two years later, he broke down the Monica Lewinsky scandal to the public which made the visitors skyrocket to the website during that time.
All of the hard work over the years gained him a reportedly $150 million and the website is estimated make around $15 to $20 million a year. Although it doesn’t seem much compared to other news sources as large as Drudge Report, considering that the website has little to no editorial and tech costs, it makes him one of the highest-earning persons in this field of job.
